WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS TO GET MY LICENSE?
The minimum requirement is 4 years supervising/foreman experience within the last 10 years in the trade you wish to be licensed. An application must be filled out and submitted to the Contractors License Board by the monthly deadline. The application includes a credit report, financial statement signed by a CPA, and 3 experience certificates from either contractors, fellow employees, or an immediate supervisor attesting to your supervisory experience and a project list with 4 years (48 months) of projects you supervised.
WHAT IS THE COST TO GET A CONTRACTORS LICENSE?
The application to the Board carries a $50.00 fee per application, the actual exams vary- check with testing agency, and once you have passed your exams, the state fees for a 2 year period are approximately $545.00. This will vary depending on when you obtain your license as well as whether you are a Sole Proprietor or Entity and RME (Responsible Managing Employee).
I’M SELF EMPLOYED, CAN I STILL GET LICENSED?
Yes, self employment does count! The requirements and paperwork are the same. Many of our successful applicants were once unlicensed contractors.
CAN YOU HELP PROCESS MY APPLICATION? WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?
Yes, we assist with application processing. We initially send you the paperwork with our deadline dates in order to file by the State's deadline of the first Tuesday of each month. After filling out the rough draft form, you will return everything to us for processing. We type up the actual application, our CPA completes and signs your financial statement, and we will review your credit report for any derogatory information. We also review your Experience Certificates and project list for completeness and to make sure they are specific to your trade. Our notary is available in Honolulu by appointment at no charge. After you have signed the completed application, we hand deliver the complete packet to the Contractors Board for review. You will receive a copy of your completed application for your records.
CAN I PASS THE STATE EXAMS THE FIRST TIME?
Yes, when you sign up for our course, you will come in and go through practice exams over and over. A staff member is always available to answer any questions or assist with any problems. 98% of our students pass the first time taking the exam.
HOW LONG IS THE CLASS AND WHAT ARE THE HOURS?
We have a self paced study program in which you go through the most current questions and answers over and over again until you are ready to sit for the State exams. This is at your own rate and pace anytime during the hours we are open. Study times vary from as little as 12 hours til as long as it takes! We guarantee you will pass! In Honolulu, our regular hours are 8am-5pm Monday through Friday with extended hours from 8am-8pm Monday through Thursday the week of the State exams. Kauai, Kona and Maui hours are 8am-8pm two days each month. Please see our schedule for exact dates and times.
CAN I STUDY FROM HOME?
No, although we do include home study material, it’s not enough for you to pass the exams on its own. It’s an overview of what you will see in class. The class consists of coming into one of our study locations and going through the most current questions and answers from the State exam which changes often.
DO YOU HELP WITH JOURNEY WORKER ELECTRICIAN OR PLUMBING LICENSES?
Yes, we offer comprehensive courses for Journey Worker and Supervising Electrician, Journey Worker and Master Plumber and many other licenses.
CAN I TRANSFER OR USE MY LICENSE FROM ANOTHER STATE?
No, unfortunately Hawaii does not have reciprocity with any other state. You must apply to the State of Hawaii, obtain approval, and pass the appropriate exams in order to obtain your license here.
HOW DO I ADD ANOTHER LICENSE CLASSIFICATION?
You must submit an additional classification application with three experience certificates attesting to your supervisory position in the new trade as well as a new project list. If you are changing from a “C” class to an “A” or “B”, you will need to submit a new financial statement signed by a CPA as well. If you are a company with an RME, you will have two applications to submit versus one application if you are a Sole Proprietor.
CAN I BE AN RME FOR MORE THAN ONE COMPANY?
Yes, provided you or someone else has 51 % common ownership of both companies. Proof must be provided to the Board.
HOW DO I CHANGE FROM AN INDIVIDUAL TO CORPORATION, LLC OR PARTNERSHIP?
You would submit an Entity application to the State Board with a letter from you stating that you are going to become the RME for the new company upon approval from the Board.
HOW DO I REACTIVATE MY LICENSE?
There is a reactivation form that must be submitted to the Board. This also includes a new credit report, financial statement by a CPA and tax clearance. If it has been more than 4 years since your license expired, you will also have to submit new experience certificates and project list to verify your experience as well as testing again.
DO YOU OFFER RESIDENT AGENT SERVICES?
Yes, we are resident agent for many of our former students. The State requires all contractors to have a local business address where their license is displayed. We hang your license on our wall and make sure you receive all Board notices and license renewals in a timely manner via fax, email or express mail service. Contact our office for current pricing.
I cannot recommend the Contractors License Center and the excellent staff enough. If it wasn’t for them I would not have passed my test. They helped me every step of the way and were very knowledgeable in all aspects. I was extremely impressed and appreciate everything they’ve done for me and my company. Thank you so much for everything!

It was a great experience with the Contractors License Center, especially with the staff. The Contractors License Center guaranteed I will pass the exam on my 1st try, which I did. Thank you for preparing my paperwork and submitting them. I am now officially a tile contractor.

Since I got my contractors license, my company V&C Drywall Contractors, Inc., is doing great. I couldn’t have done it without the help of Contractors License Center. I was really impressed with their professionalism and the personal touch that I was given.

Just wanna thank the employees at the Contractors License Center for being so nice from the day I walked in to get signed up and the day I left before I took my exam, Always so welcoming. Definitely wouldn’t have passed if I never take the time to study in their class. But I PASSED! Highly recommended.

I initially tried to take the General Building Class “B” test on my own thinking that I could pass with my work experience. However to no surprise, I completely failed with a score of 40/100. During the first test I was completely blown away at how difficult the questions were. I immediately went to Contractors License Center to help with my studying. Spending just about 1-2 hours a day for 5 days, resulted in an easy and confident 93/100 the second time around. Totally recommend coming here to secure a pass on the test.

I went in very worried about passing my test, but the course gave me a lot of confidence. I got in a lot of practice reps and the information I retained during the course helped shape how I studied on my own at home. I left the test feeling confident about my performance and scored a 92/100.
